Liberia hosts favourable geological settings for gold and diamond mineralisation. The western part of the country forms part of the Archaean Man Craton, which has high potential for greenstone hosted gold deposits, as well as good potential for diamond deposits. The eastern part of the country forms the south western extremity of the Birimian sequence of West Africa. There have been numerous major gold deposits in the West African Birimian.
Hummingbird Resources initially acquired three exploration licenses and have since arranged joint venture agreements (with an 80% interest) in a further four licenses. These licenses cover a total area of 5,267 square kilometers and are considered to be prospective for gold and/or diamond resources. Most of the licenses are located in the eastern half of the country and another is in the northern highlands, on the Côte d'Ivoire border.
Several additional license applications have recently been submitted for areas of considerable exploration interest, in the east and west of the country. It is anticipated the company will be awarded the license for the Piso project (600 square kilometers) in the west of the country, within the next few months. This license is considered to be prospective for diamond resources.
Hummingbird has also applied for seven license areas, covering over 4000 square kilometers, in the greenstone belt region in the east of the country. This country is considered to be highly perspective for gold resources.
