History
Hummingbird Resources Ltd was founded in October 2005 by the Betts family and Matthew Idiens. The Betts family business has been smelting and refining precious metals for 250 years since 1760. The family have traditionally had strong trading relationships throughout West Africa, through which Hummingbird Resources was born. Matthew Idiens has been a successful mining entrepreneur for last decade since leaving a career in the city of London.

Liberia is a small country endowed with very significant mineral wealth. It has endured a period of terrible civil war which ended in 2003. After the cessation of hostilities Stephen Betts was invited by the Interim Government to participate in the re-development of the mineral resource sector through the granting of an option to explore large areas of highly prospective but previously unexplored ground for gold.

Hummingbird Resources Ltd was founded to explore these areas. Subsequently the company has worked hard to gather as much information in as systematic and efficient a manner as possible, in order to prove that the opportunities for gold discoveries in Liberia are both genuine and exciting. Considerable difficulties have been overcome in terms of terrain and logistics, in a country whose infrastructure has been virtually destroyed and whose interior remains almost impenetrable for long periods of the rainy season. It is testimony to the hard work and dedication of the field teams that these challenges have been overcome and so much data has been collected so quickly.

A team of extremely capable individuals, both in the UK and Liberia, have been sourced, who have worked hard to build the Hummingbird business and they all deserve recognition for their contributions to date in their fields of expertise, be it financial, logistical or geological. Above all though, it has found that the Liberian context in which it is operating is developing in a fast and positive manner. Under President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, the government is making strong progress towards rebuilding the economy in a professional and very encouraging manner.

Hummingbird Resources has been able to capitalise on its ‘first-mover' advantage in the east of Liberia. Not only are the assets it holds developing well, but other opportunities are constantly being driven towards the company because of the relationships and the professional manner in which it has conducted its business.
