About Us
Hummingbird Resources Ltd was founded in October 2005. The Betts family’s core business smelts and refines precious metals and has done so for nearly 250 years since 1760. One of the sources for these raw materials has historically been through the trade with alluvial and artisanal miners in West Africa and other gold producing regions of the world.
Liberia is a small country endowed with very significant mineral wealth. It has endured a period of terrible civil war which ended in 2003. After the cessation of hostilities Stephen Betts was invited by the Interim Government to participate in the re-development of the mineral resource sector through the granting of an option to explore large areas of highly prospective but previously unexplored ground for gold and diamonds.
Hummingbird Resources Ltd was founded to explore these areas. Subsequently the company has worked hard to gather as much information in as systematic and efficient a manner as possible, in order to prove that the opportunities for gold and diamond discoveries in Liberia are genuine and exciting.
Through these long standing trade relationships the family has built up an extensive network of people involved in the governments and gold industries of these producing countries. These relationships are particularly strong in Liberia.
This website will highlight the difficulties that have been overcome in terms of terrain and logistics, in a country whose infrastructure has been virtually destroyed and whose interior remains almost impenetrable for long periods of the rainy season. It is testimony to the hard work and dedication of the field teams that these challenges have been overcome and so much data has been collected so quickly.
Several things have occurred since the formation of the company to assist its progress. A team of extremely capable individuals, both in the UK and Liberia, have been sourced, who have worked hard to build the Hummingbird business and they all deserve recognition for their contributions to date.
In order to fast-track work and to keep initial operational costs on the ground in Liberia to a minimum, Earthcons Consulting Services, Liberia’s pre-eminent geological consultants, have been used to conduct our field sampling programme, under the guidance of the Chief Geologist David Pelham..
Above all though, it has found that the Liberian context in which it is operating is developing in a fast and positive manner. The new government, under President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf is making strong progress towards rebuilding the economy in a professional and very encouraging way.
Hummingbird Resources is now in a perfect position to capitalise on its ‘first-mover’ advantage. Not only are the assets it holds developing well, but other opportunities are being driven towards the company because of the relationships and the professional manner in which it has conducted its business.
